Xdev, Clever Beans and Epos Game Studios are all working on remastering the original Wipeout games from the PSX era for the PlayStation 4. If there’s one thing this era will be known for without a shadow of a doubt, is the era of remastered games.
During the PlayStation Experience weekend in Anaheim, California, the classic racing series set in a cool future where fast-paced vehicles duke it out on crazy tracks is making a return in the form of Wipeout: Omega Collection. Sorry Vita owners, you’re not included in this one.
The announcement came with a trailer featuring a look at the classic games remastered, remade and restored for today’s generation of gamer. You can check out the minute and a half long announcement trailer below.
Just like with the remade and remastered version of the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy, the developers had to take what was featured in the old games and attempt to recreate them in ultra HD for the PS4 and PS4 Pro versions of Wipeout. And yes, on the PS4 Pro the game will support 4K resolutions, but they don’t say whether or not it will be 4K at 60fps or 1080p at 60fps and 4K at 30fps. They do mention that they are targeting 60fps over on the PlayStation Blog, but leave it vague as to whether or not 4K and 60fps will be a standard at launch.
The game is scheduled to make a return to the marketplace after years of being absent, this time launching during the summer drought in 2017. Usually big games don’t launch in the summer because AAA companies would rather wait until the fall and clean up in sales at that point, but occasionally some companies break from tradition and roll out their titles a little earlier than usual.
The game will launch with nine different gameplay modes, including Zone race, Tournament mode, Speed Lap, Time Trial and Single Race, along with Zone Battle, Eliminator, Detonator and Career Mode.
They have a total of 26 different tracks included and 46 different ships to choose from. Multiplayer will also be included, featuring split-screen for local multiplayer and up to eight people via online multiplayer. They have plans on revealing more details leading up to the game’s release.
