MassHive Media’s Azure Saga: Pathfinder is currently seeking votes on Steam Greenlight. The game is an isometric RPG with turn-based combat. The game has its own visual art-style and features some inventive combat mechanics, combining traditional turn-based tactics with a card system.

MassHive’s game appears to be somewhat of an homage to the 32-bit era of PSX RPGs, similar to games like brave Fencer Musashi, Breath of Fire IV and Legend of Dragoon.

The game centers around a character named Synch, who must find his way back home after getting stranded on a foreign world. Synch is accompanied by his AI companion, and the duo will meet other characters along the way while solving puzzles, venturing through ancient ruins, upgrading their sci-fi equipment and battling against foes along the way. There’s a strong hint of Bastion in there as well. The movement looks smooth and the overworld gameplay is definitely a throwback to the old-school 32-bit JRPGs.

Combat takes on a much different flavor, however. It may be turn-based but it’s also very fast-paced and technical as well.

The Flash-like animations may or may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it appears to work well enough in my book. The traversal and environments in the isometric mode also look well designed and show a lot of articulation and detail from the developers. So one of the cool aspects of Azure Saga is that it allows players to utilize a skill tab called “United”, which combines all three character skills together.

There’s still some rough edges that need to be sorted out, such as the quality of the UI and some flat textures used in some of the environments, but otherwise there’s a strong and solid foundation here with Azure Saga: Pathfinder.
