Marvels Teams Up With Square Enix For 2018 Game

In 2018 Marvel will make an official announcement in collaboration with Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal. The name of the project is called is tentatively called Avengers: Reassemble. It sounds like it may have something to do with what happens with the Avengers: Infinity Wars films.

In the teaser video the description mentions…

“The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018”

This was accompanied by a teaser trailer showing destroyed environments with the iconic items from the various Avengers, including Stark’s Iron Man suit, Captain America’s shield, Thor’s hammer and some busted up doors that I assume were designed to contain the hulk.

A lot of people are expecting an MMO because it’s Square Enix, but keep in mind that both Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics are renown for third-person games, adventure games and action games. The likelihood is that this could be an open-world action-RPG, mixing in flavors from both Crystal Dynamics’ pedigree with third-person action titles like Tomb Raider, and Eidos’ pedigree with games like Deus Ex.

As an MMO it just doesn’t seem viable in today’s market. While there aren’t any big MMOs to really hamper the competition due to waning interest in the genre, it would still have to have something truly unique to lure people back into the fold. Games like Final Fantasy XIV, World of Warcraft and The Old Republic have their own audiences, but as demonstrated with Marvel Heroes, it’s just not something that’s going to move big numbers.

A lot of gamers are fearful that it’s going to end up being a MOBA title. Right now that’s the hot button genre to milk, and oh boy are publishers milking it like a newborn baby on a lactating teet. The most ideal outcome is a cool action game similar to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. That game was righteous. An updated version of that made for today’s generation of systems would be glorious.

Sadly we’ll have to wait until 2018 to get news on this new project.
