Edge Of Eternity Trailer Reveals 2018 Release For Xbox One, PS4, PC

While it’s not being developed by a Japanese studio, Edge of Eternity could very well pass for a PS3 game that managed to escape from the grasp of Square Enix. There’s a lot of classical elements featured in the upcoming title from Midgar Studios, and the trailer shows that the work-in-progress project is coming along quite nicely.

Edge of Eternity was originally Kickstarted back in 2015; it’s been in development since then. According to the most recent press release it’s tentatively scheduled to release on PC in the early half of 2018 and on Xbox One and PS4 in the latter half of 2018. You can check out what the developers have accomplished thus far with the WIP story video below.

So first of all, graphically the game looks great. It obviously seems to be channeling some of Sega’s JRPG classics as far as tone and visual aesthetics are concerned. There’s also some obvious nods to Square’s Final Fantasy, and a cool throwback to the active-time battle turn-based combat that helped shape many of the classic JRPGs during the 16-bit era. The world map seems to take a lot of cues from the spacious, breathable terrain that Monolith Soft is known for using in the Xenoblade series.

And speaking of the Xeno sagas… one thing that absolutely stands out above and beyond the graphics and combat system is Yasunori Mitsuda’s soundtrack. The theme is right there on point. Mitsuda’s incomparable work on has gone down in history as some of the best music featured in video games and any other media for that matter. His scores for Chrono Trigger and Xenogears still stand the test of times.

I don’t know if Edge of Eternity will be a good game, but it looks refreshing and exciting. Most people note that the animations are pretty stiff, but they don’t have a professional animator on the team yet, so it is what it is.

One user in the comment section had a hilarious post, making a few suggestions on what Midgar should consider improving and adding to the game. AnimeManiac4Life is his handle, and he’s definitely a boob man.

Anyway, Midgar Studios is still slowly progressing through the development of Edge of Eternity. I just wish it was coming to the Nintendo Switch.
