Inspired by Space Station 13, Dean Hall and Rocketwerkz announced at EGX Rezzed — and via an AMA on Redit — their newest game called Stationeers. The new title is said to let players construct a working space station in outer space. The Minecraft-like game is set to come out this year for PC via Steam Early Access and is planned to run for $19.99 through $24.99.
Currently, and at this very moment, a lot people are skeptical of this game Stationeers due to Dean Hall being one of the developers working on the game. A lot of people believe that the title will never leave Early Access, which is now being compared to Dayz, insofar that it will never be finished.
If you look over to the trailer for Stationeers on YouTube both the Like/Dislike and comments are disabled, which is never a good sign.
A lot of people feel like this is a project to make a quick buck and laugh all the way to the bank, which at this point I would not be surprised if that were the case.
According to publication site PC Gamer, the site holds some information regarding the game and quotes from Dean Hall — when he attended the EGX Rezzed event and took up the AMA— that reads:
“The aim is ‘easy to play hard to master’. Our ‘solution’ [to sidestepping SS 13’s steep learning curve] is mainly faced around making very generic systems. So, for example, you interact with stuff ‘in world’. Want to pick something up out of a crate? look at the slot and click. We’ve kept all the UI in world as well, so when using a machine the UI is in world, on the machine, as an LCD display. Inventory on your person is a little bit convoluted and we haven’t really found a way around this.”
The site also posted this segment up during the event with Dean Hall, which covers other realms and “away missions” similar to Minecraft:
“You can use shuttles you build to ‘teleport’ to these realms. Perhaps it is a planet. Perhaps it is a derelict station. Or maybe you need to rescue some AI from aliens on their station. Find a patient and take them back for medical care. Visit some asteroids to gather resources… the intent there is to make [away missions] exciting, a bit scary/dangerous.”
The project known as Stationeers is something that Hall wanted to make for some time now as noted below.
“I have tried to make this game three times. I have spent millions of dollars chasing it. This time we went right for very robust and simple.”
Um, so… I guess we’ll see if it will see the light of day and if it will ever come out of Early Access. But, according to the current state of the game Early Access could run for years, especially if we go by this:
“At present, Hall says Stationeers is in pre-alpha and is around 20 percent complete with its most “complete game loops” being its ‘construction’ and ‘atmospherics’ features.”
The site continued on with Hall explaining Early Access plans:
“I think we will release into Early Access within a few (2—3) months. Full release will be up to 12 months after. I hope that even after release we will be successful enough to continue to drastically change the game for many years, similar to SS13 itself.”
I’m not sure how Stationeers will turn out, but the game is said to be both a single-player and online type game that features complex systems around atmospherics, power generation, medical, agriculture, food and gravity mechanics.
The game better known as Stationeers has no release date aside from “2017”.
