The upcoming macabre adventure game, Darq, received a new preview trailer from developer Unfold Games via social media.
You can check out the trailer below, featuring just 29 seconds of gameplay. However, the 29 seconds showcase quite a bit of what powers the game thanks to the Substance Painter and Unity 3D game engine. You can check it out below.

The cool part about Darq is that the game is using hand-painted characters set against 3D backgrounds.
The hand-crafted characters are mirrored after stop-motion designs, not unlike popular movies like A Nightmare Before Christmas and the Corpse Bride.
The environments are designed around light space and color tone manipulation using the shader tools in Unity 3D.
Part of Unfold Games aim is to use light and structure to set the mood for Darq. It’s a game that they want to use to be able to tell a story about dreams that devolve into nightmares.

But it’s not all about art. The game relies on horror to help tell its story about a young man trying to escape from a dream world of his that turns into a horror experience. In order to keep the horror unpredictable the game uses procedural AI model that allows the enemies to spawn at random times and in random locations. This also applies to some items for the puzzles as well.
They also plan on using that procedural engine for the way the rooms are formed in the game. Some rooms will change around if you visit them again, which prompts to give the game some replayability, especially considering that the game has multiple endings.
