Prey Launch Trailer Is Live; Dev Says Steam Refund Is Equivalent To Demo

Bethesda unleashed the official launch trailer for Prey, the upcoming sci-fi shooter due out on May 5th. The trailer is only a minute long and quickly covers the main gist of the game’s story, along with showcasing some of the enemy mimics that players will encounter.

The game centers around Morgan Yu (either male or female) and Morgan is subjected to an experiment that allows them to battle against an invading alien species that can mimic inorganic objects. This means that the enemy can take on the shape of a coffee mug or a chair or a computer. Throughout the game players will have to use their wits about them to avoids being ambushed by checking their surroundings and being vigilant while exploring.

The trailer avoids diving into the more nuanced aspects of the gameplay and instead focuses on the generic, fast-paced shooter elements, which you can check out in the trailer below.

It should come as no surprise that not everyone was pleased with the way the trailer portrayed the game. Some people felt it made the game look boring, others said that it was too generic; a few seemed to think that they should have found a more convincing way to portray the game’s more interesting features.

Bethesda and Arkane recently released a demo for the PS4 and Xbox One, and some people have enjoyed it, others… not so much.

PC gamers felt as if they were being left out of the loop, but according to an interview Raph Colantonio had with AusGamers [via Blues], the PC equivalent of a demo would be playing the game for under two hours and then getting a refund…

“It’s just a resource assignment thing. We couldn’t do a demo on both the console and on the PC, we had to choose. And besides, PC has Steam. Steam players can just return the game [prior to playing] 2 hours so it’s like a demo already. I also want to clarify that there’s no PC port. I keep on hearing ‘oh they’re going to screw up the PC port’ there is no PC port. We do the game on PC. It’s a PC game. It’s a different engine to Dishonored as well. So we might have our own sets of problems, but we are of course very careful because of what happened with Dishonored 2. So we wanted to make sure the PC version of Prey is good.”

I don’t know how well PC gamers will take to that suggestion, but it seems to point to people committing beforehand to the $60 purchase and if they don’t like it then they can get a refund. Usually the whole point of a demo is to play-test the game before committing to the $60 purchase.

Anyway, Prey will be available on May 5th for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
