Set within a dark medieval fantasy universe featuring rotoscoped animations and historically accurate combat based on classical fencing techniques and a dash of Errol Flynn swashbuckling, Bannerman is scheduled to launch in full on Steam starting August 31st.
Armitage Games sent out word – along with a brand new trailer – letting gamers know that the upcoming side-scrolling adventure title would be making its way to Steam later this year.
The game prides itself on featuring combat and fighting techniques based on real-life sword skills, not unlike the fine folks to take their swordcraft quite seriously at HEMA.
You can check out the latest trailer for Bannerman below to see what the adventuring, environments and combat is like in the 2D side-scrolling hack-and-slash title.
One thing you’ll notice is that the stances during combat are poised around the various attacks native to the common usage of the weapon. Enemies will inch forward, parry, block and strike when it’s advantageous for them to do so, and players must react accordingly.
They were able to capture the accurate sense of strikes, dodges and kill moves based on rotoscoping animations from real-life poses and movements. This is a technique that was used quite often in the past for many animated films, but was heavily popularized by animation savant Ralph Bakshi.
In keeping with the low fantasy approach to the design and combat, Armitage Games also secured an acoustic soundtrack for Bannerman, helping bring to life the flair and character of a medieval atmosphere.
The game looks as smooth as an oiled apple bottom, and so long as the controls are responsive and the challenge is fair, I think this game has the potential to become a sleeper hit on Steam.

Gamers already seemed pumped for this indie outing and I can definitely see why. You can look to get your hands on Bannerman starting August 31st, 2017 later this summer.
