Laser League, Tron-Inspired PvP Sports Game Opens Up Beta Registration

Love the visuals of Tron: Legacy? Really liked the whole lightwall effect from the Tron series? Wished there were more games like Tron in general? Well 505 Games is happy to oblige. Their new multiplayer title Laser League is obviously inspired by Disney’s Tron and it places gamers in small arenas where teams will duke it out on the grid.

The game is being developed by OlliOlli developer Roll7, and sees players taking to an arena in front of a large stadium crowd where players must activate nodes, trigger neon laserwalls, and attempt to eliminate opponents to progress to the next level. Literally, it’s like something you would expect out of Tron. Have I said Tron a lot? Because it sure does seem like that seems to be the core inspiration before the game.

If you doubt for a second that the game isn’t inspired by Tron, just check out the E3 2017 trailer below for Laser League.

Tim Woodley, senior vice president of brand and marketing at 505 Games commented about why 505 decided to back Roll7’s idea of Laser League, mentioning in the press release…

“When we saw the first prototype for Laser League, we could already feel that all-too-rare ‘just one more go’ impulse. We jumped at the chance to help Roll7 take their proven studio to the next level and realize their ambitions for Laser League.”

While some people complained that you couldn’t properly see what was going on in the trailer, the press release explains that Laser League is a fast-paced game set within the fictional future of 2150, where teams battle it out in an arena where the objective is to control the nodes on the field and activate laser grids that can cut through and disintegrate opponents. Added challenges such as floor changes, power-ups and arena mutators all add to the complexity and accessibility of the game.

The concept, if handled properly, has Rocket League levels of success written all over it.

I’ve been dying for a really good Tron clone so I have my fingers crossed that Roll7 will deliver with laser Squad.

The game is due for release in full on PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2018, but they’ll have an Early Access beta program leading up to release. You can sign-up for the beta right now over on the official website.
