A casual adventure MMO from Finnish gaming studio Kukouri Mobile Entertainment called Pixel Worlds will officially launch on June 9th.
The game kind of came out of nowhere but it’s basically a build-and-craft adventure title that seems to take a lot of social cues from Maple Story.
The voxel-based building game originally had to make its way through Steam Greenlight back in late April of this year, and by April 25th the game had been approved to appear on Steam. Originally the title was a mobile game, but Kukouri refitted it to match the expectations and playability that PC gamers have become accustomed to.
You can see what he crafting, adventuring, combat and chatting systems are like with the gameplay trailer below.
It’s not too bad. In fact, the idea of creating levels and sharing them with the community while adding modifiers like time-trials is actually pretty cool. The first thing that came to mind was Super Mario Maker, where players can create their own worlds and share them with the community.
There’s definitely an extra meta-layer of interaction and community support for Pixel Worlds thanks to a feature like that. Whether or not it will be utilized properly enough to help the game grow its community and stay relevant in today’s ever-increasingly competitive marketplace is a whole other story, but you can tell that Kukouri is at least trying to add some additional value to what games like Maple Story and La Tale have already accomplished.
In addition to this, they have weekly events, competitions, community contests and more. According to Kim Soares, CEO of Kukouri, they’re trying to position Pixel Worlds as more than just a game, saying in the press release…
“We see Pixel Worlds as more than just a game. The social aspect and active community is an integral part of the whole experience and we continuously use both in-game and social media channels to engage players.”
I would argue that they should focus first on the gaming aspects and growth over the whole social/community thing, but the numbers don’t lie, and they’ve been growing their Instagram account by a rate of 20% a week compared to average Instagram growth rates of 6-8% a week. So they’re obviously doing something right, especially if the account isn’t just filled with hot chicks with duck lips pulling off booty poses.
Anyway, you can look for Pixel Worlds to go live on Steam starting June 9th. Need more info? Feel free to check out the Steam store page.
