Arika’s EX Fighting Game Brings Back Skullomania

Arika’s upcoming fighting game for home consoles received a new trailer at this year’s EVO 2017 event. The trailer revealed more of the fighting mechanics and roster in Arika’s upcoming title, including the reintroduction of a character who hasn’t been seen in almost 20 years, Skullomania.

Shoryuken did a brief article pointing out that both Skullomania and Darun Mister from the Street Fighter EX series would be making an appearance in Arika’s upcoming 3D fighting game. Since Arika had copyright ownership over the characters, it’s the main reason why you didn’t see them appear in any of Capcom’s own titles. In a way, I guess it’s a good thing given that now we’re going to see more competition in the fighting game arena, and hopefully it will force Capcom to go back to making good games again.

You can see Skullomania and Darun Mister in action with the reveal trailer below courtesy of XusesGB.

The fighting and presentation looks like old-school arcade fighters from the 1990s brought into today’s generation of visual technology. No complaints here about that.

The actual fighting is fluid and fast, and looks like a literal evolution of the Street Fighter EX gameplay foundation, which should help separate it from Street Fighter V.

The trailer teases that gamers can look to play the game starting April in 2018… specifically on April Fool’s. I don’t know how true that is and the trailer seems to have a bit of a trollish theme to it, so it could be true. We’ll find out as it draws closer to release.

At the end of the year there will be a beta test for the game for PlayStation 4 owners. They also have plans to announce pre-order bonuses leading up to the beta test, but only for the Japanese version. Details regarding the pre-order bonuses for the other regions haven’t been decided yet.

The game will have a global release in 2018.
