A sequel to the 2004 real-time strategy game, Evil Genius, was announced recently by Rebellion. The studio explained that they originally wanted to make a sequel much sooner for the RTS, but didn’t have the resources, and considered Kickstarting the sequel. However, after managing to succeed with a number of big releases, they scratched the idea of crowdfunding Evil Genius 2.

Evil Genius 2 came back into Rebellion’s spotlight after the success of the Zombie Army Trilogy and the Sniper Elite 3 and Sniper Elite 4 releases. With the extra capital they decided they could afford to fund their own little project after becoming a publisher. So now Rebellion is funding Evil Genius 2 out of their own pocket.

The announcement came courtesy of a video that they posted up recently as part of the fourth of July celebration no doubt.

CEO Jason Kingsley talks about the state of the company, and how they wanted to self-fund and make games that they wanted to play.

Kingsley mentions that Sniper Elite 4 was quite expensive to make but he mentions that the game sold well enough to make up for it. Rebellion is also working on the Judge Dredd: Mega City One television series, and a weekly series of 2000AD comics.

He rounds off the state of Rebellion by mentioning that some of the team are already working on Evil Genius 2. The real-time strategy title sees players running an evil empire; building up their henchmen, carrying out evil deeds and masquerading the base as some other legitimate outlet. Not to take the wind out of the announcement for Evil Genius 2 by using a knife to cut the sails of excitement, but who else here is absolutely head over heels stoked for the Judge Dredd television show? If it’s as good (or better) than the Daredevil series on Netflix, I think life will be complete. Also, it would seem to fit the TV format a lot better than trying to squeeze a lot of layered social commentary into an hour-and-a-half long movie.

Anyway, we’ll have to wait for more news on Evil Genius 2. It’s early on in development so don’t expect anything substantial to surface until later this year or next year.
