The upcoming visual novel SRPG for the PlayStation 4 due out on September 5th courtesy of Deep Silver and Aquaplus, recently received a new trailer covering the game’s battle mechanics and combat design.
The trailer is just under two minutes long but it gives you a solid look at what’s in store for Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, which is a game that centers around the dangerous time of a civil war breaking out within the region. You can check it out below.
A good portion of the game centers around visual novel-style storytelling and character development. The combat is an interesting mix of tactical turn-based combat with co-op style tech moves, similar to Chrono Trigger.
If two characters are stationed in the right position around an enemy, a new combat option will open up that allows them to do single-attacks that chain into co-op final strikes. This encourages players to be wary of how they station their troops around the battlefield and how to keep in mind where each character is positioned in order to get the most advantageous attacks out of each turn.
The series has its roots deeply embedded into the visual novel genre, so if you’re more-so into Tactics Ogre combat and are looking for a game similar to Final Fantasy Tactics, you probably won’t want to look at Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth as a way to whet that thirst. The game is more-so story-oriented first and foremost, with the combat only serving as a way to further along the story or pop up where necessary.
You can look for the game to drop this September for $39.99 on the PlayStation 4. The previous press releases indicated a PS Vita release, but that was likely only for Japan. You can learn more about the game over on the Atlus website.
