Shenmue 3 Trailer Highlights Ryo’s Deadpan Face

During this year’s GamesCom, Ys Net revealed the latest teaser trailer for Shenmue III. In fact, you could say it is the first real look at the the game in motion. Deep Silver has plans on publishing the game during the latter half of 2018 for PC and PS4, and you can check out the trailer to see what the developers have accomplished so far.

First the foremost, the game retains the style that was present in the first two Shenmue titles. This means that Ryo’s face stays completely stoic throughout the entire trailer, showing blank ambivalence every time the camera catches a glimpse of his expressionless mug. It’s glorious. Check it out below.

I love that they kept the training sequences as Ryo continues to enhance his skills. The martial arts looks as if they are as solid and well respected as they were depicted in the second game, which was truly one of the highlights of Shenmue 2.

Some of the strange looking villains that they introduced in the previous games also appear to be making a return.

Running in the Unreal Engine 4, the game looks quite good. I’m also glad they still managed to retain that off kilter style that helped Shenmue stand out back in the day. It just wouldn’t be the same if they decided to try to make the game look more “realistic”.

A lot of the comment section joked that the facial animations look like they were made by the Mass Effect: Andromeda developers.

The thing is, Shenmue never had great facial animations, and Ryo was known for his deadpan delivery and blank facial expressions. I don’t know if Ys Net will attempt to modify the faces to appeal to gamers unfamiliar with Shenmue, or if they’re going to focus on keeping it the same on release?

Anyway, you can look for the game to launch next year on PC and PS4.
