Sonic fans had the opportunity to challenge friends or family to a round in Competition Mode on Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, and it seems that it is coming back in Sonic Mania. The upcoming 2D Sonic game is set to release for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch on August 15th.
The familiar but now new mode in Sonic Mania dubbed “Competition Mode” makes an appearance in the latest video trailer by Sega. The video shows off the feature where two players can strike up a match, pick a stage, and go at it to see who is the fasts with the best score.
“Surprise! Sonic Mania is bringing back competition mode, meaning you can go head-to-head with your closest friends (or rival echidnas) anytime you want. Here’s a first look at the mode in action.”

If you are new to the scene and have no idea what the latest version of “Competition Mode” has in store for you, winners are determined by factors such as goal time, score, number of items obtained, number of rings when clearing, and total number of rings gathered throughout the stage. If you happen to be unsatisfied with the rules, players can adjust them and set the number of rounds and other settings to personalize the mode to your liking.
One thing that many players do not like is the announcer’s voice, but it’s likely that you will be able to turn his voice off in the options menu, but only time will tell if you actually can.
The upcoming Sonic game that is set to take the franchise back to its 2D roots and bring back the iconic speedy maps, is set to release for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch on August 15th.
