The Long Dark Graduates From Early Access, Launches On PC, PS4, XB1

The Long Dark from Hinterland Studio entered into Early Access on Steam back in 2014. The developers slowly but surely worked through the roadblocks, fixed the glitches, squashed the bugs and ironed out the kinks for the episodic survival game. Three years later and the game has officially graduated from Early Access and launched for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The game is available right now for $34.99, but you can get it for 10% off the normal price on PC for only $31.49 during the first week of the game being on sale.

The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting after a geomagnetic storm has killed off power throughout known civilization. You’re trapped out in the cold having to muster your wits and your will to survive, using what weapons you can and the resources of nature to battle the cold, fend off hunger, and fight tooth and nail against hungry animals.

You can see what the gameplay is like for the minimalist-looking survival title by checking out the launch trailer below.

Part of the thrill of The Long Dark is that there is permadeath, so you have to think wisely and think soundly before making rash decisions. There’s also no hand-holding, so you have to discover and rely on emergent discovery in order to progress through the game.

There’s also some voice acting in this free-form, non-narrative title featuring Jennifer Hale, Mark Meer, David Hayter, and Mr. Deus Ex himself, Elias Toufexis.

There are a total of five episodes in the first season, so we’ll see where the game goes from there. The first two episodes are only supposed to offer like 15 hours worth of gameplay. However, this game has built up a rather dedicated and somewhat addicted fanbase; people have logged in like 1,400 hours on this thing and are still playing like a mother-funker.

Crazy times.

You can get your hands on The Long Dark right now for PS4, PC and Xbox One. Hollywood recently tapped the project to work on a feature length film, as reported by DualShockers.
