A new card combat game from Hi-Rez Studios called Hand of the Gods has entered into its beta phase, and the developers decided to take the game to Early Access on Steam to get user feedback and finish off some of the core systems before launching in full.
The game is currently accessible right now as a free-to-play title, so there’s no price of entry for the base game. However, they did launch with a series of DLC packs priced at $4.99 for the starter pack, $19.99 for the Venus Competitor’s Pack, and $19.99 for the Founder’s Pack. You can get each of the packs right now during launch week for 25% off the normal price.
The game features a variety of different gods from the game Smite. Hi-Rez is basically leveraging the popularity of CCGs right now to move from the MOBA space to the card game space. Valve is doing the exact same thing with Dota 2 and their upcoming card game.
Many are following in the footsteps of Blizzard, who successfully managed to transmute the themes of the Warcraft franchise into a successful card game known as Hearthstone. The game was making Blizzard about $20 million a month, as reported by Game Rant, so obviously others are trying to dip their fingers into the honey pot as well.
As for Hand of the Gods, the title is a turn-based tactical strategy game where you bring your cards to life on the board and attempt to out-maneuver and out-wit your opponent using a deck of cards. If you need a quick rundown of how the game plays, you can check out the trailer below.
Unlike a lot of other card games out there, there’s an actual visual element to Hand of the Gods so that you see the actions playing out on-screen and you get to see the combat unfold in a dynamic and entertaining way.
If you want to give the game a go you can do so right now by visiting the Steam store page. They’ll be keeping the game in beta (Early Access) until they feel it’s ready for a full release.
