ELEX, Hodgepodge Sci-Fi Action-RPG Now Available For PS4, PC, XB1

Piranha Bytes and THQ Nordic have announced that their sci-fi, medieval, techno-action RPG, ELEX, is currently available for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

The game could best be described as the phlegm from the mouth of a Star Wars LARPer who got slapped by a Fallout 4 cosplayer after the LARPer swapped spit with a Gothic fan.

The game is a mish-mash of slapdashery and open-world antics put through a strainer of triple-A antics so that the only thing left is a semi-unique, mid-budget affair.

If that all sounds like a basket full of overwrought descriptions and messiness, well… I hate to break it to you but that’s exactly what ELEX looks like after you snag a look at the launch trailer below. Check it out.

Now this isn’t to say that the game is bad or will be bad, or that the game isn’t worth playing. It very well could be the second coming of fun, but the outer shell looks a little rough around the edges, which is a typical idiosyncratic trait of Piranha Bytes’ development ecosystem.

Nevertheless, ELEX warrants command of creativity. Players will join up with a faction, either focusing on magic and melee, or techno-sorcery and projectile weaponry.

The game mixes in dinosaurs with mechs, flamethrowers and swords, jetpacks and fireballs. It’s a hodgepodge of genre miscegenation, and Piranha Bytes seems awfully proud about their cross-pollination of features into their software Frankenstein.

The facial animations aren’t much better than Mass Effect: Andromeda, and the gameplay looks like a mix of Fallout 3 meets Kingdoms of Amalur. This isn’t to say that that’s a bad thing, it’s just to note that this game looks like it could be all kinds of jangly.

I imagine you’ll really want to check out the reviews first and foremost before you commit to a purchase, but the game is currently available right now for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
