Deep Silver and Atlus have announced that Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond The Myth is currently available both digitally and physically in North America and digitally in Europe for the Nintendo 3DS, starting today. For those of you living across the pond, you’ll be able to pick up a physical version from a store near you starting November 3rd.

The turn-based, classically made JRPG features an all new adventure in the Etrian Odyssey series, this time centered around a new adventurer attempting to reach the top of the formidable Yggdrasil tree. It’s essentially a Dragon Ball-style story, where a group of brave adventurers team up to reach the top of the tree, because legend tells of a story that whoever reaches the top of the Yiggdrasil tree will have a single wish granted.

Players will be able to create their own adventurer and fill out their party with up to 10 different unique classes, along with utilizing various racial attributes to give their character additional bonuses.

Combat is the typical turn-based style, but with the added layer of strategy thanks to party positioning and class skills. You can snag a look at the combat and get a brief overview of the story and challenges that lie in wait with the launch trailer below.

It might be a turn-based game when it comes to the combat but the thing to keep in mind is that certain enemies and certain classes have specific bonuses depending on where they’re positioned, so you’ll have to think wisely about which characters you have on your team and where you have them placed. Some will be able to do additional damage from the back row, while others will receive penalties from being up front. There’s a mix-and-match game to keep the combat and strategies feeling fresh.

But beyond the combat there are also other elements to the game as well, including loot finding, and map making. Intrepid explorers will have to keep an eye on where they’ve traveled to in order to plot out the labyrinth of Yggdrasil.

You’ll also be trekking through the tree maze with a soundtrack put together by old-school composer Yuzo Koshiro. Character illustrator and artist Yuji Himukai also contributed to the game’s fantasy-oriented aesthetic, which should help 3DS gamers feel like they’re playing something that came out of the PSX era.
