Guardians Of Arcadia, Classic JRPG Set To Arrive On Xbox One And Steam

Fabula Epica announced recently that the classically made, nostlgia-driven JRPG, Guardians of Arcadia, is set to arrive on the Xbox One and Steam. They don’t give an exact release date as to when the game will launch, but they do inform gamers that it’s a throwback to the old-school way of gaming with chibi designs, character-driven stories and strategic turn-based combat.

Guardians of Arcade is about a group of unlikely heroes led by Hikaru and his sister, Aki, as they embark on an adventure to finally topple the despotic general, Nero of Baikal.

Sure the plot seems simple enough, but sometimes it’s the simple things in life that are the most enjoyable.

You can see what the game looks like with the trailer below.

The 3D role-playing game is being made in the Unity 3D game engine. Graphically the game uses the old 3D phong-style shading with inked outlines. Design wise the characters look like they come right out of a GameCube title.

There’s some slight performance judder while the main character is running around, and the environments look like they were scaled for giants – but the actual assets aren’t too bad. The turn-based camera angle hearkens back to the Legend of Legaia-style camerawork where it was low and close to the battle.

It’s hard to really gauge what the game is like based on the trailer, but it’s still a bit rough around the edges. As showcased in the trailer, they have an early 2018 release penned in for the game.

I don’t know how well it’ll do but the name and premise are quite promising. I would definitely have to see more before jumping onto the hype wagon. Hopefully they’ll roll out some more promo trailers leading up to release.

In the meantime, you can learn more about Guardians of Arcadia by visiting the Steam store page.
