Ballistic Interactive has tapped young adult novel writer C. Michael McGannon – known for his work on Charlie Sullivan and the Monster Hunters and KAOS Obsidere: The Nightmare Has Begun – for their upcoming horror-RPG called Hellhunter.
The game sees players in the role of a supernatural investigator, working as a freelance hunter-for-hire while taking on dangerous cases dealing with otherworldly terrors.
What’s interesting is that the game will see players having to not just their brawn to take on foes, but their wits as well. Preparation and proper investigation are the the order of the day, as different types of foes will require different types of equipment you’ll need to bring on your hunt. Are the creatures susceptible to UV light? Are they weak against silver? Do you need raw iron? Are special bullets required to take them down?
Your decisions, your preparations and your tactics will be your key to victory, or the lack of employing them could be your pathway to failure. A trailer from back in 2016 gives you a brief idea as to what to expect from the crowdfunded title. You can check it out below.
The game reminds me a lot of Hunter: The Reckoning combined with the show Supernatural.
I love the idea that the horror and terror elements aren’t just popping out at you, but you actually have to use your investigative skills while rummaging through the abandoned houses in the outback of Australia, or the dilapidated buildings filled with potential frights.
In a way it’s very much like Ghostbusters, but a lot more grounded and without the levity of comedy.
Much like Supernatural on the CW, you’ll have to rely on your notes and wits to prepare for the kind of enemies you’ll be facing off against. Not every baddie requires the same tactic, so you’ll have to be prepared.
Once you figure out what you’re facing off against, you pop open the door of your van and examine what sort of weapons, tools, and equipment you’ll need to take into battle with you.
A lot of gamers have been begging for co-op for this game so they can imitate Sam and Dean. I tell you this right now, if this game supports modding in any way expect a Supernatural mod to be the very first thing on the docket.
Anyway, the game will sport multiple contracts, various weapons to acquire, and various types of dangerous situations to explore. With C. Michael McGannon helming the story, I’m curious how the overarching plot will unfold in the actual game.
It’s still a long ways off from release, but it’s expected to arrive at some point in the second quarter of 2018.
