Kart racing games are a rarity for some very odd reason. We used to have dozens of copycat clones of Super Mario Kart from back in the early and mid 1990s, from Wacky Wheels to Power Rangers Zeo: Battle Racers to Battle Cars, there were lots of miscellaneous, over-the-top racing games out back in the day. Well, these days the pickings are slim and the offerings narrow. But thanks to developer West Coast Games, there’s a new kart racing game currently available called Rally Racers. It looks and plays similar to the old Crash Team Racing games on the PSX, but it’s missing the multiplayer!
The name is pretty simple and the gist is equally as simple, but the core of it all is to have fun racing around colorful, tropical tracks while engaged in combat racing and soaking in the environment. The game recently graduated from Early Access on December 21st, 2017 and is currently available on the Steam store for $11.99.
The game is described as a family-friendly, fun-oriented racing title. You’ll be able to compete in the quest mode, perform stunts, unlock new weapons and boosts, and upgrade your car as you race through different worlds. You can check out the trailer below to get an idea of what the gameplay is like.
As showcased, the game lets you boost, hit the ramps, blast around turns and do a lot of the standard stuff you would come to expect from a 3D rally game.
Most gamers have completely ignored it, and it’s likely due to the fact that Rally Racers is missing the most important feature that would give it near infinite amounts of replayability: multiplayer!
I’m not sure how they managed to get through Early Access without it, or what the point of Early Access was if they didn’t add it, but they would likely gain tons of new sales right off the bat with either a local multiplayer mode or an online multiplayer mode (or both).
Vector Unit seems to do it right by porting over a lot of their mobile games but adding in much-requested features like split-screen local play and online multiplayer for up to eight players. Hopefully West Coast Games take a similar approach.
