Bandai Namco is gearing up to release SoulCalibur VI sometime in 2018 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Before the game hits store shelves and the digital scene, the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu covers gameplay features that producer Motohiro Okubo, production producer Michinori Ozawa, and director Yoshiyuki Takahashi of SoulCalibur VI discuss.
In the latest issue of the Weekly Famitsu, producer Motohiro Okubo, production producer Michinori Ozawa, and director Yoshiyuki Takahashi of SoulCalibur VI talk game progress, gameplay elements and new characters.
Firstly, the three feel that due to the series’ 20th anniversary and that there are no 3D weapon-fighting games on current generation hardware, it only seemed right to make Soulcalibur VI.
Moreover, the three touched on how they want players to know the world of the “original Soulcalibur” by thoroughly re-telling the story once again. In addition to the above, this move will “supposedly” bring not only current players into the fold, but also those who played previous titles in the past.
Looking over to new stuff, there will be new characters introduced in SoulCalibur VI. These characters will be important to the “overall story”. We also learn that guest characters might make an appearance, too.
As for fighting mechanics, the vertical slashes, horizontal slashes, and running to fight will not change. Additionally, movement speed and controls are being tuned to focus on “comfort” so that “anyone can play.”
The “Reveresal Edge” system is a new feature that integrates offense and defense to almost all techniques with a single button. This “Reveresal Edge” can stop high, middle, or low attacks, and upon mastering this technique, even “beginners can read the moves” of advanced players. However players who master the game will still have an advantage over beginners and advanced players.
The three also touched on Critical Edges, a skill that can be activated with a single button, and a system called Soul Charge that opts for charged attacks. The latter can be paired with the Critical Edge system.
Moreover, a “Lethal Hit” system is currently in the works for advanced and master players. Upon connecting specific techniques with certain actions fulfilled, you can perform deadly combos through special cinematics viewed in slow motion.
The “Lethal Hit” system will destroy your opponent’s equipment. The three went into detail and explained that if Mitsurugi’s lower body equipment is destroyed, he will be left wearing a loincloth. If Sophitia’s hair accessories are destroyed, her hair will change.
Lastly, the three feel that “custom character creation” is a must that cannot be removed from the series, and that development on SoulCalibur VI is 70 percent complete.
With all of that said, SoulCalibur VI is due out for PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2018. You can also check out 10 minutes of gameplay with info on the game thanks to MKIceAndFire.
