Candleman, Visually Somber Platformer Launches For PS4

Spotlightor Interactive announced that Candleman is coming to the PlayStation 4. The game originally came out for the Xbox One back in early 2017, and now it’s landed on the PlayStation 4.

You can pick up a digital copy of the game right now from over on the PlayStation Store for $14.99.

Candleman is about a small candle who must overcome the darkness and make his way through a variety of challenging platforming obstacles while his wax slowly burns out.

Along the way players will be able to light up Candleman in brief spurts of just 10 seconds. So he has to be strategically burned in order to progress through the game.

You can see what the gameplay is like with the rather abstract trailer below.

We see some really odd, strange, and beautifully dangerous creatures that players will encounter, as well as some reflex-based platforming segments.

The hook for Candleman is in its uniformly abstract world. Things look familiar, and yet they aren’t. Things seem normal, and yet… they aren’t.

It’s certainly not like Super Mario or A Hat In Time where there’s a bright familiarity with locations and themes that we’re oftentimes accustomed to in 3D platformers. In fact, when you look at the environments and the lighting, there’s a somewhat sinister refrain in the way the lights and shadows bounce around the stages, creating ominous looking corners, and sometimes dangerous passageways.

In a way, the game reminds me a little bit of Little Nightmares.

The game had a fairly quiet launch on the Xbox One last year. Due to Microsoft doing a rather unremarkable job in promoting many of the original indie titles that pass through the platform (save for Cuphead) most gamers probably completely missed out on it. But now that Candleman is available on the PS4, you can give it a go if you’re interested in an isometric platformer with a rather somber theme.

[Update: The developers revealed that Candleman will also be appearing on Steam later this month on January 31st, so be sure to keep an eye out for the game’s Steam launch as well.]
