Crossing Souls Takes 1980’s Nostalgia And Slaps It Into An Action-Adventure Game

Fourattic and Devolver Digital’s Crossing Souls is prepping for release next month on February 13th for home consoles and PC. The game is a throwback, action-adventure game that takes a ton of references from the 1980s and combines it with point-and-click, action-arcade, and isometric beat-’em-up gameplay themed around today’s generation of gaming.

The upcoming title is yet another pixel-made retro game, but it at least has the wherewithal to attempt to kindle that Saturday morning nostalgia. The super-friends aesthetic depicted in the animated cinematic that was released a while back. You can check that out below.

The story of the game centers around a group of friends who encounter a pink reality-altering stone that involves a government conspiracy that they have to solve over the course of summer vacation.

So the game is like one part Zombies Ate My Neighbors, one part Saturday Morning RPG and one part Stranger Things. I can dig it.

The story includes plenty of references to classics from the 80’s, including Gremlins, E.T., Back to the Future and The Goonies. The soundtrack will be similar to what you hear in the trailer, mixing in synthwave, synth-pop, and an orchestral track also inspired by the leitmotif-laden era of John Williams’ scores.

The game’s release date announcement originally came back during the PlayStation Experience but a lot of people missed out on it likely due to all the other big game announcements centered around the PSX and Game Awards show.

If the gameplay looks as solid as the trailer then it might end up being a nice little worthwhile 16-bit looking action-adventure game.

Hopefully the story doesn’t devolve into a sociopolitical beating over the head like so many other titles these days, but it looks solid so far. You can wishlist or follow the game by checking out the Steam store page or wait for February 13th to pick up a digital copy on the PS4.
