Canadian game developer Tribute Games announced that their crowdfunded 2D side-scroller, Mercenary Kings, which mixes in quest-based missions in side-scrolling sandbox levels and custom gun creation, will be headed to the Xbox One, PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo Switch starting February 6th. It’s just weeks away from release.
The game isn’t just re-releasing outside of the original PC and PS4 platforms, Tribute Games also decided to give the game a huge revamp, turning it into the “definitive adaption”.
So what does this mean? It means two all new characters to play, including Frigg the resistance fighter and C-Zar the robot.
It’s pretty obvious that Tribute is trying to diversify the playable characters.
You don’t have to stick with the default color palette, though. Each of the four playable characters can be customized to your liking, so you can make them as light or as dark or as colorful as you want.
A trailer also accompanied the news about the new version of the game set to release soon. It covers some of the 20 new weapon parts added to Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition, and some of the new weapons they’ve added as well.
Co-founder of Tribute Games, Jean-Francois Major, explained that the Reloaded Edition will also be available for current owners of the game, so you won’t have to repurchase the game if you already backed it or purchased a copy before or after it was in Early Access…
“We are very excited to bring Mercenary Kings to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox 1 and PS Vita users. The Reloaded Edition will provide current players with a refined experience loaded with new content and welcome new players to enjoy our mixture of customizable mayhem and over the top boss encounters on new consoles,”
I’ve already put tens and tens and tens of hours into Mercenary Kings back when it was in Early Access. It was a ton of fun even when it only had a few levels and the weapon selection was still limited. It’s a highly addictive game.
Additionally, there are over 100 missions spread across 16 different sandbox-style, handcrafted stages. There are also plenty of parts and items to loot, bosses to kill, and hostages to rescue.
A limited physical release of Mercenary Kings: Reloaded Edition is also in the works courtesy of Limited Run Games, so keep your eye out for that as well.
The standard version of the game is currently available for PS4 and on Steam for PC.
