The Disappearing Of Gensokyo, Touhou Project Twin-Stick ARPG Lands on Steam

Chinese fan-circle development team, MyACG Studio, announced that The Disappearing of Gensokyo is currently available for purchase on Steam for $10.99. During the first week of availability you can get the game for 15% off the normal price for only $9.34.

The game is a Touhou Project, centered around action-oriented gameplay in a 3D environment. The game isn’t just another typical twin-stick shooter or vertical scroller, you’ll actually get to run around in the environments and tactically take down your foes.

The game has poor a English translation at the moment, but the developers at MyACG are currently working with the Touhou community to translate the game properly for the Steam audience. They’re also continually updating The Disappearing of Gensokyo to fix bugs and improve the quality of life features.

The hook for the game is that it’s a re-imagining of the traditional Touhou Project, turning it into something akin to an RPG version of RoboTron. Players will have a dozen or so different characters to play, each with their own abilities and weapons, along with a wide variety of enemies and bosses to defeat. The polish on the game is a heck of a lot better than what I was originally expecting from a fan project. The character animations are passable, but the lighting, environments, and general visual aesthetics are very much on point. The game has a soft filter in place that works well with the shaders that give the bright and roseate-driven environments.

Gameplay wise, each of the characters having their own projectile attacks and the ability to dodge and evade incoming enemy fire keeps the game centered around skill-based gameplay as players explore the various locations from the Gensokyo universe.

Some of the user reviews point out that the difficulty in the game is somewhat impaired by the gameplay mechanics not being fine tuned enough. There are complaints that there isn’t enough stamina so it’s difficult to continuously dodge enemy attacks, and that you run out of ammo quite often during boss fights, and that you can get one-shot up close and by some enemies not entirely in the screen.

The general consensus is that The Disappearing of Gensokyo is still a fun game, but it’s a flawed game. MyACG are intent on updating and perfecting their project, however, so expect future patches to address some of the complaints brought up in the user review section.
