Yume Nikki Is Free On Steam Ahead Of New Project Announcement

Kikiyama’s RPG Maker title, Yume Nikki, is now free-to-play on Steam. The dream-scape role-playing game where you travel through the psychological horrors of a young girl while encountering surreal imagery is hailed as a cult classic. Well, Kikyama and AGM Playism have announced that there’s a new Yume Nikki project in the works and a countdown timer has been initiated.

The announcement about the countdown time literally is just a link to Kadokawa’s website.

The website has nothing there but an actual countdown timer, where in the next two weeks gamers will find out exactly what will be revealed.

In the meantime, gamers are encouraged to download the free, Japanese-made, RPG Maker title and experience a journey into a dream world. The object of the game is to go around and check characters to collect “Effects”, which can then be used to alter the main character.

There is no real objective to the game besides exploration and collecting “Effects” and using them. As mentioned on the Steam page, there is no story or narrative to follow other than walking around. In a way, you could say… it’s a walking simulator. You can see what the game is like thanks to the Steam trailer below, courtesy of Niche Gamer.

The feedback for the game is distinctly positive, though. So a lot of people really enjoy the whole surrealistic, non-linear approach to the game’s design.

A lot of people are saying it’s a great indie title and that it sure beats the Social Justice Warrior nonsense coming out of a lot of studios. In fact, mEEmM4star sums up the game rather succinctly, writing…

“I played Yume Nikki before the steam release and I’d say it’s one of the best indie games ever made. Despite the gameplay being simple, it is leagues ahead of any soyboy walking simulator. This is easily one of my top 10 favorite games.”

A lot of people are also saying not to look up walkthroughs or Let’s Play series or live-streams of the game because it will ruin the experience, but instead to go in blind and play Yume Nikki for yourself.

If you’re interested in the game, you can check it out for free over on the Steam store page right now.
