Bulkhead Interactive and Square Enix announced that Battalion 1944 is now available on Steam as an Early Access title for $14.99.
The game is being promoted as part of the Square Enix Collective, and is a throwback to classic old-school competitive shooters but with the added bonus of today’s tech and advancements. More specifically the game features physics-based ballistics, dynamic gun mechanics, and bullet penetration.
Joe Brammer, the studio lead at Bulkhead Interactive, explained what the developers have been focusing on with the title, stating in the press release…
“It’s no exaggeration that Battalion 1944 is the game I’ve always wanted to make. We’ve enjoyed success at Bulkhead before, but we’re all gamers who grew up playing the best FPS games, so the idea of making one that stripped things back to the competitive nature of the shooters of old has been a dream come true.”
You can see what the gameplay is like with the Early Access trailer, which captures the competitive nature of Battalion 1944.
The game features 5-on-5 battles for PvP oriented battles that takes place across capture the flag matches, team deathmatch, and domination. The game also supports LAN play for those of you who enjoy playing classic matches with your buddies by lugging your master rigs over to the house and having some good old fashioned showdowns.
Over the course of the Early Access run – which is expected to last up to a year – the developers will be taking in feedback from the community to refine and evolve the gameplay. They plan on adding in additional content, making balance updates, and patching out the bugs along the way.
It’s a bit of a shame it’s only a 5-vs-5 PvP FPS given that we have so many games out there like it, but maybe down the line we’ll see something kind of boundary pushing like a 50 vs 50 or 100 vs 100 mode at some point in the future to really make things lively.
For those of you interested in the more intimate elements of WW2 PvP, you can check out Battalion 1944 right now over on the Steam store page.
