When the cast was first announced for Nickelodeon’s Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there was a lot of speculation over how they would handle April O’Neil given that the actress cast to voice her was African American. Well, Nickelodeon revealed the first images of the cartoon, and the company has decided to play the diversity card by turning April black.
The news went live via the official TMNT Twitter account, which revealed the character art for the characters, which showcases a disgusting looking rendition of Master Splinter.

This is a far cry and major departure from how April O’Neil has been portrayed over the last 30 years, where she’s known for being the fiery redhead in the yellow jump suit
In the 1990 live-action flick, April O’Neil was portrayed by the feisty Judith Hoag, furthering the timeless appeal of the intrepid and gumptious reporter.
The new version of the character attempts to appeal to the millennial crowd and the dreaded hipster generation by race-swapping the character and giving her hipster glasses and what appears to be a radioactive bat.
One can only imagine what they’ll do to Casey Jones, who will likely end up being turned into an Asian immigrant who plays polo instead of hockey.
The media is already running with the race-swap of the character, praising Nickelodeon for attempting to rewrite the history of the cartoon and live-action versions of O’Neil for the millennial crowd. Headlines from most Left-tilting websites like Entertainment Weekly have focused entirely on April’s race-swap compared to how she’s appeared in the comics, cartoons and live-action films over the last couple of decades.
It all seems part and parcel for the media’s forced diversity push in today’s entertainment industry.
