Ark System Works announced that Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo is currently available right now for the Nintendo Switch as a digital download from the Nintendo eShop for $14.99. The game was originally released on the PlayStation Vita back in 2015, but Ark System Works decided to bring over some of the Vita’s software refugees to the Nintendo Switch, and Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo was one of the few titles to win that lottery.
The game is an isometric, action-RPG themed around utilizing mech suits known as GEARS. The game is a little bit like a isometric version of Probotector or a mech version of Shock Troopers 2. The game takes place after World War IV when the mech suits known as GEARs betray the human race and go rogue, known as RAGE units.
With the berserk units killing humans, a few of the survivors manage to recover some of the GEAR units and manage to launch a counter-offensive to take back Earth from the rogue mechs and eventually destroy the RAGE units once and for all. And this is where players come into the picture.
As a mech pilot, your job is to go around and destroy all of the rogue mech units standing in your path with whatever weapons you can get your hands on. You’ll have a bevy of weapons at your disposal, including chainsaws, laser cannons, pile bunkers, and blades. You can see what the game looks like in action with the launch trailer below.
The game is a pure Japanese title. A+ Games focused on giving gamers a hack-and-slash style experience while roaming through the post-war environments, taking out dozens of rogue units along the way.
The actual animations and combat mechanics leave a lot to be desired – the animations aren’t especially clear and the hand-animated swings and attacks appear to be designed close to the notch on the scale that reads “passable acceptability”.
Anyway, if you can get over the melee mechanics, the game also has some projectile weaponry at the player’s disposal that you’ll pick up across the story-oriented campaign mode.
Additionally, there’s an arena combat mode that you can play through if you want to test your skills and improve your combat efficiency.
Unlike Ark System Works’ upcoming BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, Damascus Gear: Operation Tokyo comes with all of the previously released DLC so you get the complete package.
You can pick up a digital copy of the Nintendo Switch version of the game from over on the Nintendo eShop right now.
