Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden Video Demonstrates Tactical Combat, Customization, Skill Trees

Funcom released a new 35 minute gameplay video for the upcoming tactical game, Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden, which is due for release later in 2018 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

The game is based on the tabletop game called Mutant, and it follows a trio of mutant characters, including a hog, a duck, and a zombie.

The original cinematic for Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden received a lot of positive feedback from gamers for its visually compelling take on a post-apocalyptic setting featuring some crazy characters.

The 35 minute video starts with the intro sequence to give gamers a small gist of the game’s lore and story setting before heading into the actual game. You can check out the video below.

The story mission takes place during the middle of the game, where the trio of scavengers are in search of a power generator.

The trio attempts to sneak through a camp that has some patrolling ghouls.

Much like XCOM, the game plays out in real-time when you’re outside of combat, and you can move around and position your characters or explore the environment.

Once you engage in actual combat, the game turns into a turn-based tactical experience.

Identical to XCOM, you’ll be able to utilize cover, use stealth weapons to avoid attracting more enemy reinforcements, and also take advantage of mutation skills that allow players to perform certain feats during combat.

Skills breakdown into three categories: Major, Minor, and Passive.

While the skill tree is rather limited, the developers explain that you’ll need to bring different sets of skill combinations with you into battle depending on the location and depending on the circumstance. It’s not an all-or-nothing sort of ordeal, and simply having skills isn’t enough, it’s about having the right skills with you during combat.

They also talk about how you can modify and upgrade your weapons by visiting the workshop at the Ark station, where you can acquire elemental and status-dependent ballistics. You can also pick up quests and side-activities from the bar.

You can change the way each character plays out, including changing them into stealth-oriented characters, explosive-oriented, or even sniping-oriented. Each character class can be tactically altered to fit the turn-based play-style that fits your fancy.

During the demonstration we also see that characters don’t have to stick together in real-time mode. You can split them up and position them where you feel they’re most effective, as depicted later on in the video.

Now if you were hoping for a fast-paced, third-person shooter, somewhat similar to how the CG trailer depicted the trio of scavengers, you might be disappointed with the slower-paced, more tactical gameplay elements.

However, if you’re in the mood for a character-driven story with turn-based tactical gameplay and a smorgasbord of options in which to equip and modify the way the characters handle during battle, you might want to keep your eye on Mutant Year Zero: Road to Redemption.
