Star Renegades Has Players Forming A Tactical Rebellion Against An Ever-Evolving Empire

Right now there’s a strong desire from indie developers to pursue rogue-like gaming. It’s part of the current trend within the gaming community, sort of like how AAA publishers are eyeing Battle Royale games, and how video game journalists are obsessed with raping women. Massive Damage is continuing the rogue-like fad with their newest tactical RPG, Star Renegades.

The squad-based RPG sees players taking on the roles of interplanetary rebels fighting against an evil authoritarian empire.

You’ll have access to a variety of tactical combat maneuvers, including counters, interrupts, combos and team-based moves that can be utilized with a Reactive Time Battle System, an alternative to the Active-Time Battle System. You can see what the gameplay is like with the trailer below.

One of the things that they try to get across repeatedly is that Massive Damage is the same development studio behind Halycon 6: Starbase Commander.

Massive Damage obviously took what worked in the previous rogue-like outing and applied it to their newest game, Star Renegades. The teaser trailer starts with an animated sequence that leads into a turn-based battle sequence showing a giant mech wiping out your squad… but it makes it known that the “rebellion lives on”.

This is the general theme behind Star Renegades – that building up and sufficing with a doable squad that dies in battle doesn’t mean it’s the end of the game. The rebellion lives on.

You can unlock hundreds of different characters spread across a variety of different unit classes. Your objective will be to take your squad and battle through a war-torn planet into the heart of the Empire’s base.

The hook for the game is that the missions are procedurally generated and the enemy AI adapts and evolves with your tactics. So you’ll have to constantly switch up your tactics, strategies and equipment for your group.

I would like to see more before deciding on whether or not this is a game to get hyped over. You can keep track of announcements and news for Star Renegades by checking out the official website, or you can wishlist and follow the game over on the Steam store page.
