MakinGames and Team17 announced that the retro-themed beat-’em-up game, Raging Justice, will officially launch on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4 and PC starting May 8th. Originally the game was set for a summer release, but it looks like it’s coming sooner than expected.
The news for the release date was accompanied by news for a brand new character named Ashley. He’s a crime-fighting kid who knows kung-fu, a little bit like a white-kid version of the black-kid from Streets of Rage 2, Skate.
They released a new trailer featuring Ashley fighting it out in the upcoming game, which you can view below.
Despite having a girly name, Ashley’s moves don’t look that bad. He has a standard cache of punches and kicks and grab moves. Most interesting is that one of his flip-grabs really does look like the roll-up flip that Skate used in Streets of Rage 2 and Streets of Rage 3.
The reaction to the trailer from the Sony ponies hasn’t been the most positive. They’re claiming that the game is ugly; that they laughed out loud unintentionally; that Streets of Rage is better, etc., etc.
They also opted to downvote the trailer quite a bit over on the Sony PlayStation YouTube channel.
There seems to be some mixed reactions to the game. Some people like that there are more side-scrolling beat-’em-ups on the way, others are disappointed with the quality of the beat-’em-ups.
I think the biggest letdown is how ugly and lame the two main characters are. The karate kid looks all right, but the old cop and the sassy black chick look like they could very well be villains in a beat-’em-up game. It’s a shame that the concept was wasted on two completely unremarkable and forgettable lead characters.
Anyway, Raging Justice is due out on May 8th for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
