Underworld Ascendant Trailer Reveals Physics-Based Combat, Dungeon Crawling

505 Games and OtherSide Entertainment released the first gameplay trailer for Warren Spector’s Underworld Ascendant, which is the next step in bringing back the Ultima experience to a whole new audience for a new generation of gamer.

The trailer previews the deep dive into the Stygian Abyss, where players will have to battle through enemies and explore the dangerous dungeons.

The trailer compiles clips of various dungeon scenarios where trips, enemies and dangers lurk around every corner… literally. You can see what it looks like in action below.

The first-person dungeon crawler sees players battling against armored skeleton warriors, and deeply disturbing monstrosities from the deep, just shy of being an Eldritch abomination from out of a Lovecraftian horror tale.

The game isn’t just a hack-and-slash title, though. The trailer reveals some stealth elements, where players are able to take out foes without being seen, as well as utilize physics-based magic abilities to scale through the environment and platform your way to safety.

You can also blast down doors, use crates, boxes and other entities to crush enemies, as well as utilize elemental effects to destroy foes.

This is basically going to be an upgraded sandbox experience, where the narrative shapes itself around the choices and decisions you make throughout the game world. Much like The Elder Scrolls you’ll be able to join up with different factions, alter the course of the story, and unravel events based on those choices.

What’s more is that OtherSide Entertainment is pushing the Unity engine to its limits by revolving a lot of the gameplay and problem solving around physics-based mechanics. You’ll have a variety of weapons at your disposal, including bows, swords, magic wands and more.

Underworld Ascendant is due out for release at some point later in 2018 for PC. You can wishlist the game right now over on the Steam store or keep track of the development leading up to its full release.
