One of the most highly anticipated indie games set for release this year is White Rabbit’s Death’s Gambit. This is a really cool, retro-style Metroidvania that has some elements in a horror-filled, Gothic world filled with monsters, bosses, and large-scale fights. Adult Swim and White Rabbit announced that Death’s Gambit is due for release on August 14th, 2018 later this year for the PS4 and PC.
The game centers around a warrior resurrected by Death to kill other immortals. You’ll explore the world of Siradon, reaping souls for Death, and ensuring that the river Styx gets its due. You’ll travel through the world, unlocking new weapons, battling foes, and upgrading your gear.
A cinematic trailer helps setup the premise for Death’s Gambit, as well as gives you a brief look at some of the gameplay mechanics.
The game has been in development for quite some time, and White Rabbit has been showing off bits and pieces of the combat and exploration systems since as far back as 2016.
As you travel through the world, platforming and scaling the levels, you’ll encounter various other knights, monsters, beasts and fiends. Your job will be to unlock new weapons and abilities in order to defeat them and send them to the underworld.
There are a variety of biomes to visit in Death’s Gambit, with giant bosses to battle in each realm. The game reminds me a lot of Chakan: The Forever Man or Shadow of the Beast, insofar of being a dark, Gothic-laden game filled with challenges and extremely difficult AI opponents.
The style of the game definitely stands out, looking like a more mature version of Salt & Sanctuary, or a much darker version of Dead Cells.
You can pre-order Death’s Gambit right now, but I don’t think I need to tell you the rule about pre-ordering… right?
Anyway, you can look for the game to launch on August 14th for $19.99 for PS4 and PC later this year. For more info feel free to visit the official website.
