RPCS3 PS3 Emulator Can Nearly Run God Of War Trilogy At 60fps

The RPCS3 emulator for PS3 games has been making some serious improvements and progress. There’s a video showcasing the progress that the latest versions of RPCS3 has made when running games like the God of War trilogy.

YouTuber BSOD Gaming put together a near 15 minute video covering the playability and compatibility of the God of War trilogy on the RPCS3 emulator. You can check it out below.

As mentioned in the video, at fixed frame-rates the games run at 60 frames per second. During the first five minutes of the video we see some of the gameplay segments from the first game, and even during boss fights and demanding gameplay sequences the locked frame-rates does not change from 60fps.

It’s noted that it’s actually possible to run the game at unlocked frame-rates, reaching up to 120fps, but the inconsistency and higher frame-rates will make it difficult to play some of the mini-games.

It’s noted that even for God of War II, the game still runs clean and pristine at 60 frames per second, whether it’s during the pre-rendered cutscenes or during the larger-than-life boss fights.

Just like the first game, you can also run God of War II with unlocked frame-rates and it will also allow you to run the game at up to 120fps, but it will come with some game-breaking glitches due to the fact that the controls and mini-games are designed to be run at a 60fps cap.

The end of the video takes players through the process of getting God of War III to work for the RPCS3. You’ll have to modify some of the debug settings, graphics settings, and emulation settings in order to get the game to run. There are also some graphical artifact issues with the text menus and some of the asset rendering.

You can, however, enter into the game but capability still isn’t entirely on par to where it should be. In fact, in-game play is limited to around 11fps on average, light modules don’t load properly, there are issues with shadow rendering, and the UI text is completely unreadable.

Character mapping appears to be in place, along with shaders, animations, and physics. Special effects and environmental alpha effects all work, but geometry lighting is all turned off, along with textures and shader effects.

There’s still a long ways to go before God of War III is fully playable on the RPCS3, but the first two games appear to be fully playable at 60fps.

You can download the latest alpha version of the RPCS3 emulator, which just released on May 18th, 2018, by visiting the official RPCS3 website.
