Sega announced that the mysterious racing game that they have in store for home console and PC gamers due out this winter is called Team Sonic Racing. The game appears to be a successor to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed, but without the ridiculously convoluted name.

Sumo Digital is handling the development of the game, and a brief teaser trailer was let loose to accompany the game’s formal announcement.

The description states that Team Sonic Racing can be played solo or with other players as a team. There will be online and offline modes, along with a variety of characters and tracks from the Sonic universe. So essentially, it’s a successor to Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Details about the game beyond what’s described above won’t be revealed until E3. You can, however, check out the teaser trailer below.

The interesting thing here is that the trailer first teases Sonic and Shadow competing with each other. However, given that they both come out of the garage at the same time, it seems to indicate that Sumo Digital might be borrowing from Crash Team Racing. In Crash Team Racing you could team up and work together during the race in order to get to the finish line, using team tactics and weapons to keep opponents at bay.

We won’t know for sure how the team mechanics will work, but it wouldn’t surprise me if you could team up together in Team Sonic Racing by choosing your racer and a partner. I doubt it will be like Mario Kart Double Dash, where two players could work together on a single kart, switching and swapping positions in order to battle against other opponents and working through the turns by using team drifting mechanics.

In this case it looks like the team racing in Team Sonic Racing will be setup where both players will have their own vehicle and will be able to help each other to finish line.

We’ll get details on exactly how it all works out when the game is put on full display at this year’s E3.
