20th Century Fox revealed the first full trailer for The Predator, the upcoming action-flick directed by Shane Black, the same guy who starred in the original Predator from 1987 as Hawkins, and also the same guy who directed Iron Man 3 and wrote all the Lethal Weapon movies.

The trailer reveals the basic plot of the film, which is that a Predator is hunting some people and attempting to evolve its own DNA.

The trailer starts with a little boy receiving some Predator gear in a box through the mail. We don’t know who sent the boy the box or why, but the trailer then cuts over to a dude being interrogated in a lab, where we later find out that the dude is actually an assassin.

For whatever reason, the Predator seems to come to the lab to either kill the dude or retrieve something, but I suppose we’ll have to wait for another trailer to find out what’s going on.

Most of the comments responded with a lot of unenthusiastic “mehs” and “whatevers”. It’s mostly because the trailer is entirely mediocre in the most basic way imaginable.

One of the problems is that the cast of characters is still highly unimpressive, with a lot of low-testosterone, diversity-quota actors filling in the roles that should have gone toward real action heroes. That’s not to mention that most of the action in the trailer isn’t easy to follow and doesn’t really do much to make the Predator look efficient or stealthy.

The only narrative thread we’re fed is that the Predator is collecting DNA in order to upgrade their race. It’s hard to tell if this is a rogue tribe trying to transcend or if there’s something else going on. The fact that it’s only one Predator means he’s obviously on a mission, and it seems unlikely that simply hunting prey is that mission.

Right now nothing about the film looks noteworthy, and the way the trailer was put together reminds me of Aliens vs Predator: Requiem.

This first full trailer is very underwhelming, but hopefully the second trailer will give us something more substantial to sink our teeth into.

The Predator is due for release in theaters on September 14th.
