Bad Times At The El Royale Trailer Features A Voyeur, Kidnappers, And A Killer Priest

Every once so often a movie comes along that looks like it’s either going to be a masterpiece or a cinematic cacophony of noise and nonsense. 20th Century Fox’s Bad Times At The El Royale looks like one of those movies.

It has all the hallmarks for becoming this generation’s Things To Do In Denver When You’re Dead, but stylized after saturation-rich films like The Neon Demon or The Bad Batch.

Bad Times At The El Royale - Raining Parking Lot

The trailer starts off like Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, but it takes a decidedly dark turn that you probably, most certainly, never would have seen coming. Check out the trailer below.

So let’s unpack a few things here:

First of all, I’m torn about how much the trailer actually shows and how much it reveals. We learn that Jeff Bridge’s character isn’t really a priest, but appears to be a robber of some sort. It looks as if the black woman is another poor, oppressed victim, as is standard in most Western-made films, and it reveals a little bit about Jon Hamm’s hotel manager that leaves us with a ton of questions.

In the same way that we see a lot, we’re also left scratching our heads and wondering what other surreptitious quirks lay beneath the surface of this dysfunctional group of violent people residing at the El Royale.

It’s a cool looking flick based on how many moving parts seem to be working for it. I hope that promotion of the film moving forward is more reserved and leaves audiences to take the journey on their own when they finally plop down in the theater seat and begin watching when Bad Times At The El Royale starts rolling.

Also, I can’t help but feel as if Chris Hemsworth’s character stumbled out of Far Cry 5 and somehow made it into this pulpy period piece.

You can look for Bad Times At The El Royale to land in a theater near you starting October 5th, 2018, later this year.
