Editorial: Doom Eternal Speculations And Stuff You Might Not Know

With the announcement of Doom: Eternal at Bethesda’s press conference this E3 has stirred up a lot of interest in the long-running series once again. If you happen to be new and wish to speculate what this upcoming iteration has in store for Hell goers, you might have arrived at the right place.

For starters, this piece will look over the two highlighted parts in the following description featured on bethesda.net:

“As the DOOM Slayer, you’ll return to take your vengeance against the forces of Hell. Set to an all-new pulse-pounding soundtrack composed by Mick Gordon, you’ll fight across dimensions as you slay new and classic demons with powerful new weapons and abilities.”

With that said, we’ll be looking over dimensions, which Doom critics (or lore historians?) debate the timing of Doom 1‘s episode 4 placement and that of Starport in Doom 2 (stage 7). And new and returning enemies.

Where Will Doom: Eternal Take Place?

Doom (2016 [and spoilers ahead]) ends with our hero, Doomguy, sucked back to Mars stuck in front of Hayden. Taking The Crucible, he insists that, in spite of everything, research must continue. Since Hayden can’t kill Doomguy but worries of him stifling the plan, he has him transported to an unknown location, saying they will meet again.

The true question is, where is Doomguy teleported? With the mention of “you’ll fight across dimensions” could mean that we’ll see a Doom 1 episode 4 or Doom 2 Spaceport event unfold.

If you are new and think, “but the trailer showed Doomguy on Earth, so that’s where he should be teleported.” Interestingly, a similar conversation took place four years ago on Doomworld.com, which user LocoCaCo asked:

“Shouldn’t the City levels be first? At the end of Doom 1, Doomguy is clearly outside a city. Logically, this makes sense. Why would Doomguy be at a Starport when he wasn’t far from the City?

And there’s more order confusion. Why does the City separate the Hellish Outpost and Hell levels?

But enough of my whining, in my opinion, the map order should of been The City -> Starport -> Hellish Outpost -> Hell”

This spawned a response from user Gez, who noted:

The Doom II storyline actually explains that. What survived of humanity has massed into spaceships to flee, but the demons have some sort of device that somehow prevents the survivors from actually going away (maybe a forcefield or AA cannons or whatever). Doomguy has a mission: infiltrate the starport, locate the mechanism, and turn it off.

“YOU HAVE ENTERED DEEPLY INTO THE INFESTED
STARPORT. BUT SOMETHING IS WRONG. THE
MONSTERS HAVE BROUGHT THEIR OWN REALITY
WITH THEM, AND THE STARPORT’S TECHNOLOGY
IS BEING SUBVERTED BY THEIR PRESENCE.

AHEAD, YOU SEE AN OUTPOST OF HELL, A
FORTIFIED ZONE. IF YOU CAN GET PAST IT,
YOU CAN PENETRATE INTO THE HAUNTED HEART
OF THE STARBASE AND FIND THE CONTROLLING
SWITCH WHICH HOLDS EARTH’S POPULATION
HOSTAGE.”

You complete your mission in Circle of Death. Mission accomplished, game over. But wait, there’s more! You can take on another mission! And since the alternative is sitting there and waiting to die, you figure you may as well.

“YOU HAVE WON! YOUR VICTORY HAS ENABLED
HUMANKIND TO EVACUATE EARTH AND ESCAPE
THE NIGHTMARE. NOW YOU ARE THE ONLY
HUMAN LEFT ON THE FACE OF THE PLANET.
CANNIBAL MUTATIONS, CARNIVOROUS ALIENS,
AND EVIL SPIRITS ARE YOUR ONLY NEIGHBORS.
YOU SIT BACK AND WAIT FOR DEATH, CONTENT
THAT YOU HAVE SAVED YOUR SPECIES.

BUT THEN, EARTH CONTROL BEAMS DOWN A
MESSAGE FROM SPACE: SENSORS HAVE LOCATED
THE SOURCE OF THE ALIEN INVASION. IF YOU
GO THERE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO BLOCK THEIR
ENTRY. THE ALIEN BASE IS IN THE HEART OF
YOUR OWN HOME CITY, NOT FAR FROM THE
STARPORT. SLOWLY AND PAINFULLY YOU GET
UP AND RETURN TO THE FRAY.”

So here you have the explanation why you go to the starport first (to help humans) and to the city next (to hinder demons). Also, nothing says that the city you see in the E3 (and E4) end screen is the city in the second episode of Doom II.

“YOU ARE AT THE CORRUPT HEART OF THE CITY,
SURROUNDED BY THE CORPSES OF YOUR ENEMIES.
YOU SEE NO WAY TO DESTROY THE CREATURES’
ENTRYWAY ON THIS SIDE, SO YOU CLENCH YOUR
TEETH AND PLUNGE THROUGH IT.

THERE MUST BE A WAY TO CLOSE IT ON THE
OTHER SIDE. WHAT DO YOU CARE IF YOU’VE
GOT TO GO THROUGH HELL TO GET TO IT?”

“How do I destroy a hole? I dunno. Let’s go to the other side maybe.”

“THE HORRENDOUS VISAGE OF THE BIGGEST
DEMON YOU’VE EVER SEEN CRUMBLES BEFORE
YOU, AFTER YOU PUMP YOUR ROCKETS INTO
HIS EXPOSED BRAIN. THE MONSTER SHRIVELS
UP AND DIES, ITS THRASHING LIMBS
DEVASTATING UNTOLD MILES OF HELL’S
SURFACE.

YOU’VE DONE IT. THE INVASION IS OVER.
EARTH IS SAVED. HELL IS A WRECK. YOU
WONDER WHERE BAD FOLKS WILL GO WHEN THEY
DIE, NOW. WIPING THE SWEAT FROM YOUR
FOREHEAD YOU BEGIN THE LONG TREK BACK
HOME. REBUILDING EARTH OUGHT TO BE A
LOT MORE FUN THAN RUINING IT WAS.”

Well I haven’t found how to destroy the hole, but I’ve done the next best thing and killed all the demons. I guess I can as well go back to the hole and go back to Earth.

To sum up the above, and this is me speculating, Doomguy could be teleported to a Starport or to an outskirt dimensional part of Hell like in the first Doom episode 4 and must work his way to the city like in Doom 2.

Slay New And Classic Demons

Thanks to active user Man of Doom, we learn that Archviles, Arachnotrons, and Pain Elementals, and possibly juvenile Cyberdemons (or Belthagaars) will make an appearance in this Doom.

Further Look on Doom Eternal Teaser

Something worth noting is that all throughout Doom: Eternal‘s trailer we see these large tentacle monsters slithering around Earth. Could they be a bigger version of the same Parasites that control the Hell Guards in Doom (2016)?

Another thing worth noting, since new monsters are coming will we see Doom 3’s Wraith, Trite, Tick, Bruiser, Cherub, and Maggots? Also, will we see this unused Doom 3 monster that has no name?

The Archvile Or Flame Boi Makes His Return

If you read on to this point, kudos to you. This is a trivia point if you happen to be new. Did you know that the Archvile’s dying sound is a little girl screaming “why?” According to Robert Prince, a video game composer and sound designer for id Software, he recorded a young girl and pitch shifted it down and mixed it with other sounds. So next time you kill one, you now know what it’s really saying. A video lies below for you to hear the sample.

Doom: Eternal gameplay will be shown off at QuakeCon starting on August 10th, 2018. So if you want to know more about the upcoming game, you know where to tune in.
