[Update 7/20/2018:] The Early Access for Fear of the Wolves has been delayed by several weeks.
[Original article:] Vostok Games and Focus Home Interactive initially announced Fear the Wolves back in February of this year. Recently, they just announced that the game will enter into Early Access on Steam starting July 18th during the middle of the month.
The announcement was accompanied with a trailer for the Russian-themed Battle Royale game, which is set in a dystopian Chernobyl environment.
The game borrows from Vostok’s previous work on GSC Game World’s S.T.A.L.K.E.R, giving gamers something familiar to latch themselves onto. Unlike S.T.A.L.K.E.R., however, in Fear the Wolves the objective is to kill off all 99 other players and become the last survivor standing.
The trailer was initially released during this year’s E3. Surprisingly the trailer racked up more than 2.1 million views, along with tons of feedback on how people feel about the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. meets Battle Royale concept.
The trailer itself showcases some of the general gist of the gameplay. You’ll start with a melee weapon and attempt to take down foes, acquire better gear and traverse through the large, open-world sandbox.
The Early Access version of the game will launch with 20 guns, 25 attachments, 15 armor types, air drops, consumables and more.
You’ll be able to traverse a 25 square kilometer map that contains the Chernobyl area and the surrounding locations, including towns, forests, mountain areas, storage facilities and army camps.
A dynamic vote-based weather system is in place to mix up the gameplay, and there are various vehicles you can commandeer to make your way across the sandbox.
Much like S.T.A.L.K.E.R., there are also irradiated zones, so you’ll have to equip hazmat suits.
Unlike other Battle Royale games, though, instead of having a circle close in on you, radiation becomes thicker and thicker around the map and the only way out is to kill other players and get to the escape helicopter.
There is a lot of content planned for release once Fear The Wolves enters into Early Access. An entire roadmap of info has been laid out over on the Steam store page. You can check it out if ahead of its release.
