Ska Studios’ side-scrolling attempt to make a Dark Souls clone called Salt and Sanctuary will make its way to the Nintendo Switch on August 2nd.
While a bunch of game journalists are keen to call everything Dark Souls, the reality for Salt and Sanctuary is that it really is a Dark Souls clone. You start off by creating your own character, customizing their look, and then sending them into a hostile and dangerous world where you must use your wits and your reflexes to overcome enemies through a fantasy-Gothic setting.
The hack-and-slash gameplay and Metroidvania-style design sees you traversing through a grim-dark world filled with platforming challenges and massive, unforgiving boss fights.
You can check out the gameplay trailer below to get an idea of what Ska Studios was going for with Salt and Sanctuary’s design.
The game starts you with a basic weapon and low-level gear, but as you level up and get stronger, you’re able to scavenge for and acquire better gear, and higher level equipment.
The game relies on skill-based combat, and players are required to block, dodge, jump, and strike with precision during combat in order to overcome the foes.
You take on the role of a Saltborn after being shipwrecked on a dreary island filled with death and decay. You’ll be able to customize your character class from a range of options, including sword and board wielders to battlemages.
The Switch version of the game features 20 different bosses to defeat, multiple endings to unlock, a New Game+ mode, along with all new special modes designed for endless replayability. They also ensured a local co-op mode was present so you and a friend can battle through the hordes together.
There are 16 different weapon types to unlock and an expansive skill tree to utilize.
The game will be available on the Nintendo eShop digitally for $17.99, while a physical release known as the Salt and Sanctuary: Drowned Tome Edition will be made available later this year during the holidays at a retail store near you.
