Godzilla: The Planet Eater Anime Trailer Features Final Showdown For Earth

Godzilla takes on the cosmic form of Ghidorah in a final battle for Earth in Toho Animation Studios’ 3D animated feature length film, Godzilla: The Planet Eater. The name is rather fitting, as Ghidorah and Godzilla fight for the remnants of Earth after humans have been driven to the brink of extinction.

A near two minute trailer for the film was posted up recently by New Trailer Buzz, which you can check out below.

Like any other typical Godzilla flick, the movie isn’t really about the towering monster, but rather the humans and their relationship to the destruction of the Earth and their attempts to reclaim amidst Godzilla and Ghidorah’s epic showdown.

Visual-wise, the film has a great aesthetic. Godzilla looks towering and menacing, with his scales taking on the look of battle-worn armor as opposed to just being a layering of skin. The design also looks a lot closer to the recent remake as opposed to the typical Toho design, which is interesting.

Ghidorah isn’t even anything other than a giant golden dragon, looking like a Super Saiyan version of Shenron.

Animation-wise… it’s the typical 3D designs with the anime motif. The problem is that they still used the old fill-frame between the key frames, giving it that very obvious CGI look. I’m not sure why they don’t have sketch artist to do a rough series of the animations based on the storyboard and then have the 3D animators mimic the cels based on the animation sketches. This way you get the same animation quality of the hand-drawn designs but with the time and cost-savings that come with using 3D. Arc System Works seems to have perfected the method at this point and are churning out games left and right using that technique.

Anyway, you can look for Godzilla: The Planet Eater to arrive next month on November 9th. It will be a Japanese release for now, but expect the translated version to hit a streaming service near you.
