Resonance Of Fate, Forgotten JRPG Makes Its Way To PC With 4K Support

Way back in 2010 Tri-Ace and Sega released the JRPG Resonance of Fate (also known as End of Eternity in Japan) for PS3 and Xbox 360 to very little fanfare. The game was overshadowed by a variety of other big releases that year, from Treyarch and Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops, to Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption, there were a ton of huge heavy-hitters that released almost each and every month. All this big releases ended up burying one of the most original JRPGs under a litany of memorable titles, such as Transformers: War For Cybertron, the very first Metro 2033, Bad Company 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Halo: Reach and Mafia II to name a few.

As mentioned, nearly every single month had at least one huge AAA title dropping, which is the complete opposite of what it’s like in this day and age. Poor ‘ole Resonance of Fate didn’t stand a chance.

I remember writing laboriously about the game in a very loving fashion in order to keep it present in the minds of those looking to play a really awesome JRPG with a unique gun-driven combat system, but it was all for naught. Back then there were just too many great games to play and not enough money to go around for everyone to buy them.

Now that great games are no longer being made, Tri-Ace decided to try their hand at re-releasing Resonance of Fate on PC and PS4 with updated assets that support 4K UHD output. This means you get to play the game the way it was always meant to be played: on a beastly gaming rig that can render the sort of graphics that would give home consoles aneurisms if they even attempted to try the same thing.

The game centers around a trio of young people living in a world dictated by a machine that controls the each human’s lifespan. The system is called the Zenith System and it maintains population control for humanity as pollution has run rampant across the planet. The main story centers around unfolding the cult-like societal structures put into place around the Zenith System and the characters who run into opposition trying to bring humanity back from the brink of extinction.

While the story is typical Japanese fanfare, it’s the gun-based combat system that really stands out. The game centers around utilizing flashy gun-kata that players will use across dynamic environments where positioning, timing, and combo attacks can be utilized to take down foes.

The real highlight is the customization features for gun fetishists. You can modify the weapons from top to bottom in ways you probably didn’t think was possible, as outlined in MaliceNX’s video below.

If you’ve been itching for a real JRPG with a cool battle system, lots and lots and lots of guns, some gun-kata, and a lot of character customization, you’ll definitely want to pick up a digital copy of Resonance of Fate for PC. Yes, the game is also available for the PS4, but it’s best to stick with a real system made for real gamers, and not something you would find gathering dust in the corner of an NPC’s home.

Resonance of Fate HD is available over on the Steam store for $34.99.
