EQ Games, Tripwire Interactive and Pixeldash Games announced that Road Redemption has currently launched on the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. You can pick up a digital copy of the game right now from the PlayStation Store or from the Nintendo eShop for $19.99.
The game is a spiritual successor to Electronic Arts’ Road Rash series. Except, unlike current day EA they didn’t load the game up with microtransactions, in-app purchases, or a buttload of unnecessary DLC.
The game is like a mix of the classic Road Rash games with a bit of Motorstorm and Burnout. You get the melee fisticuffs at high-speeds just like Road Rash, where you can hit, kick, and even grab opponents and smash them into objects or force them into other vehicles. But there’s more… you also get projectile weapons like UZIs, pistols, revolvers, shotguns, grenade launchers, harpoon guns, and AK-47s. This adds a whole new complexion to the combat in the game and some high-end thrills to match the high-octane racing present in Road Redemption.
And yes, the game supports single-player racing, four-player co-op racing via split-screen, online PvP, and online team racing. It truly is a throwback to classic video games when they were made to be fun and entertaining instead of a conduit into gambling addiction.
EQ Games CEO, Ian Fisch, explained in a post on the PlayStation Blog that it wasn’t just about rekindling nostalgia with familiar gameplay, it was also about elevating the genre with new kinds of gameplay and features, with the campaign mode ratcheting up the difficulty and gameplay options leading to a huge showdown in the final races…
“We wanted variety in Road Redemption to come from building on top of the game’s core mechanics as someone plays through the campaign. For instance, in the campaign’s opening races, players will mostly stick to simple (yet satisfying) weapon swings, kicks, and parries. However, late in the game a player might zap a heavily-armored racer to his right with a stun baton, fire off a few AK-47 rounds into the racer dropping pipe bombs in front of him, then take out the truck trying to edge him off the road via a sticky C4 bomb, before knocking the racer to his right off his cycle with a sledgehammer… all in the span of three seconds!”
I can say from firsthand that this game is worth the $19.99 price and then some. I’ve been playing Road Redemption since its debut into Early Access some years ago, and haven’t stopped playing it since. It’s easily one of the best games this generation. That isn’t a joke or hyperbole. It’s a fun, replayable action-racing title with a ton of unlockable content and goodies, including unlockable guest characters like Shovel Knight.
If you want a game to play that’s actually fun, Road Redemption is the game to buy.
