POLAR Trailer Sees Mads Mikkelsen Embracing His Inner Metal Gear-Hitman

Combine some of the odd aesthetic flavorings of Metal Gear Solid with its over-the-top characters with the solemn, villain-vs-villain stylings of IO Interactive’s Hitman, and you end up with something close to the live-action adaption of the graphic novel, POLAR.

Basically the film is like if Agent 47 was thrust into the world of Metal Gear Solid, but he was retired and played by Mads Mikkelsen.

The film has a strangely hypnotic color pop with the contrasts between the dark blues, navies, and blacks, and the eye-catching yellows, greens, and lots of red.

Thematically it reminds me of a mix of some northwest indie film fused with the violence of a South Korean flick. You can check out the near three minute trailer below courtesy of Movie Trailers, which is filled to the absolute brim with all sorts of violent madness, yet manages to give nothing terribly substantial away.

So I guess it’s time to actually talk about the plot.

It’s a little bit like John Wick, insofar that when hitmen retire from the service they receive an eight million dollar retirement bonus. The company decides that they want to rescind this policy on Mads Mikkelsen’s character, which results in a string of colorful and charismatic villains after Mikkelsen’s character. To complicate matters further, his hot young neighbor, played by Vanessa Hudgens, ends up getting captured.

So not only does Mikkelsen find himself taking out all manner of rival hitmen to keep himself alive, but he also ends up on a mission to save Vanessa Hudgens as well, who is a demure, bird-watching young woman who mostly keeps to herself.

The film looks like it could have some interesting action sequences, and it’s always cool to see Mads Mikkelsen in more action-oriented roles. The only downside is that this is a Netflix film, and that company is notorious for squeezing in some sort of Leftist agitprop at some point.

Nevertheless, you can look for POLAR to hit theaters and Netflix on January 25th.
