It was recently announced that the Japanese action-RPG that was in development by Cygames and Platinum Games, will no longer be in development by Platinum Games. Back in 2016 it was announced that Granblue Fantasy: Relink was in development by Cygames and Platinum Games. Since then we’ve only sporadically heard and seen tidbits and flecks of the game through CG concept art or teaser trailers. Well, after three years of working on the game, Platinum Games has announced that their contract is up and their work on the project is done.
Gematsu is reporting that Platinum Games is no longer on the project, and that the game’s logo is no longer appearing on Platinum Games’ website, while the Platinum Games’ logo is no longer appearing on the Granblue Fantasy: Relink website.
Obviously, logos don’t mean much of anything, but if that isn’t concrete enough for you, an actual press release was issued indicating that Cygames will take over 100% of the development of the game, and that they will remain committed” to delivering the game that fans expect. Platinum, meanwhile, stated in a blog post on February 5th, 2019…
“While we, PlatinumGames, have been working with Cygames in co-development of the upcoming console game Granblue Fantasy: Relink, we officially announce our contract on the project has come to an end. Development will still continue, but be handled solely by Cygames’ internal development team.
“We would like to express our thanks to everyone who has shown interest in the project, and ask that the same support should continue for Granblue Fantasy: Relink as its production continues forward.”
Some gamers are worried about the future of Platinum, given that the company had a couple of missteps with large projects, the former being Scalebound, which Microsoft canned.
They did, however, manage to work with visionary Yoko Taro and create NieR: Automata, which went on to sell millions of copies across home consoles and PC.
So maybe the studio will be able to pull it together, wipe those tears away, and make another game with a high-quality, hot waifu that will sell millions of copies… just like NieR: Automata.
