The second trailer for Detective Pikachu has dropped and…it actually makes the movie look like a heck of a lot of fun?

We all knew that it was only be a matter of time before a live-action movie set in the world of Pokemon was thrust in front of us, but it’s probably safe to say nobody expected it to be set within the spinoff series of Detective Pikachu. So when Warner Bros. Pictures first revealed the upcoming movie last year, folks were rightfully stunned.

That goes double when it was revealed that Ryan Reynolds would be taking on the titular role, even though the internet was full of petitions to sign on Danny DeVito, who actually more closely resembles the voice of the character from the original Japanese version of the game than Mr. Deadpool.

While the original trailer gave us a vague idea of what the movie was going to be about (And even frustrated a few diehard fans with some of the more realistic character designs) this second trailer paints a more detailed picture of what’s to come. In short, it looks like a surprisingly funny and heartfelt buddy cop adventure that just so happens to feature a bizarre cast of monstrous characters.

I’m what you might call a mild fan of the Pokemon universe, but this latest trailer managed to heave me straight onto the hype bandwagon. There are several jokes that actually manage to land during its 2.5-minute runtime, and a whole bunch of action sequences are matched perfectly to Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding Out For A Hero.”

Now that I sit back and think about it for a moment, I really shouldn’t be surprised that Detective Pikachu is the route the crew decided to take for the Pokemon series’ first major live-action movie. It’s the perfect setting for a silly but sweet crime noire tale, which is probably the perfect narrative to bridge fandoms both young and old. Kids get to see “real” Pokemon running around while the tongue-in-cheek version of a grim-dark Pokemon world is just edgy enough to appeal to an older crowd. And, again, based on what we’re seeing here, it looks like extra care was taken to make sure the writing and performances were strong, meaning even parents who don’t necessarily want to be sitting in the theater with their kids shouldn’t have too much to complain about.
