Starbase, Voxel Vertex-Based Space MMO Coming To PC Via Steam This Year

Are you looking for a new space-sim MMO to play? If so, a game worth keeping an eye on that aims to push physics-based gameplay to the forefront of its feature list is Starbase. Frozenbyte’s upcoming game sports an in-house engine and will drop sometime in 2019 for PC via Steam.

Publisher and developer Frozenbyte has a catalog of games that consist of Shadowgrounds, Trine, and other indie titles. Jumping into the 3D-space, Frozenbyte aims to fold destructible physics and an infinitely expanding universe all into one game that is Starbase.

After five years in the making, the devs look to explore an MMO with fully destructible environments and objects. As an additive, the space players fill will be close to infinite, where the game’s focus is on building and designing spaceships/stations. The devs also note that exploration, resource gathering, crafting, trading, and the usual survival-sim schtick is mixed in with FPS mechanics.

Anyway, the official announcement trailer for Starbase showing in-game footage along with the official description sits below:

“Starbase is a hybrid voxel/vertex-based space MMO with a fully destructible and infinitely expanding universe, with a focus on building and designing spaceships and stations, exploration, resource gathering, crafting, trading, and combat.”

Obviously, the game has a long ways to go, although that should come in as no surprise since it’s hitting Early Access (and it’s in alpha). However, frame-rate issues along with some graphical, and lighting designs will hopefully see immediate improvements. I’m also pretty sure the devs will relay said changes through frequent update logs (or at least we can hope).

Lastly, if you are curious as to what Starbase will feature at launch when it hits Steam Early Access, you can read the following blurb from the game’s said store-page:

“Early Access allows the players to explore, buy and modify spaceships, form social connections and to earn money by gathering and selling resources. The players can start building their home stations at the Mega Station and begin the exploration and creation of the Starbase universe together with the developers.”
